📚 Complete Guide — Free Online Image Rotator
When and Why You Need to Rotate an Image
Image rotation is one of the most common image editing tasks. Smartphones and cameras embed orientation data in EXIF metadata, but many applications ignore EXIF and display images at their raw sensor orientation — sideways or upside down. Explicitly rotating and re-saving fixes this permanently.

Rotation Angles Reference
| Angle | Effect | Common Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| 90° CW | Turns right | Portrait phone photo shown landscape |
| 90° CCW | Turns left | Landscape photo shown portrait |
| 180° | Upside down | Camera held inverted |
| Custom ±° | Any tilt | Straighten skewed scans, creative tilts |
Understanding EXIF Orientation vs Actual Rotation
Modern cameras and smartphones store orientation data in the image's EXIF metadata rather than physically rotating the pixels. This saves processing time in-camera. Most modern apps (browsers, phones, Photoshop) read EXIF and display the image correctly. However, many older apps, web platforms and CMS systems ignore EXIF orientation and show the raw pixel orientation — which may be sideways or upside down. Solution: Rotate the image so the pixels themselves are in the correct orientation, then strip the EXIF orientation tag. Our tool does exactly this.
Lossless Rotation for JPG Images
Standard JPG rotation re-encodes the image, which introduces minimal but measurable quality loss. For production workflows requiring truly lossless JPG rotation (exactly 90°, 180° or 270°), the technique is to rotate the DCT blocks directly without decompression. Our browser-based tool uses canvas re-encoding which is near-lossless at high quality — if strict lossless JPG rotation is required, command-line tools like jpegtran -rotate 90 are the appropriate choice.
Document Straightening — Getting the Angle Right
When straightening scanned documents, the ideal workflow is: (1) Estimate the tilt by measuring a line that should be horizontal or vertical. (2) Enter the negative of that angle to counter-rotate. (3) Crop to remove the white border areas that result from the canvas expansion. For a document tilted 2° clockwise, enter -2° to straighten it.
