❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an open password and permissions?+
An open password (also called a user password) is required to open and view the PDF. Permissions control what viewers can do once they have opened the file — such as printing, copying or editing.
Which encryption level should I choose?+
AES-256 is recommended for most users — it is the industry standard and supported by all modern PDF readers. Use 128-bit RC4 only if the recipient uses an older PDF reader. AES-256 Max adds the strongest owner-level lock.
Is my password stored or sent anywhere?+
No. Your password and file are never sent to any server. All encryption is performed locally in your browser. We have no access to your password or your document at any point.
What happens if I forget my password?+
There is no way to recover a lost password as we do not store it anywhere. Please save your password in a secure location such as a password manager before protecting your PDF.
Can I protect a PDF that is already password protected?+
You will need to remove the existing password first using our "Remove PDF Password" tool, then re-protect it with your new password and settings.
Does protecting a PDF affect its content or quality?+
No. Adding password protection only adds a security layer to the PDF. All text, images, fonts and formatting remain completely unchanged.
Can I remove the password later?+
Yes! Use our "Remove PDF Password" tool to unlock your protected PDF at any time. You will need the original password to remove it.
