What is a public IP address?+
Your public IP is the address your internet service provider assigns to your router. It identifies your internet connection to the outside world. Devices on your home network share one public IP but have different private IPs internally.
Can I hide my IP address?+
Yes, using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) routes traffic through a server in another location, masking your real IP. Tor also hides your IP through multiple relays. Note: VPNs change what this tool shows.
Why does my IP location show the wrong city?+
IP geolocation is approximate — typically accurate to the city or region level but not street address. ISPs often register IP blocks at their headquarters city rather than your actual location.
What is an ASN?+
An ASN (Autonomous System Number) identifies a network of IP addresses under a single routing policy, typically an ISP or large organisation. It groups all IP ranges belonging to, for example, "Comcast" or "Google Cloud".
Is my IP address permanent?+
Most home ISPs use dynamic IPs that change periodically. Business connections and servers often have static IPs. Mobile devices change IPs frequently as they switch networks.
