❓ FAQ
What is Whois?+
Whois is a protocol used to query databases storing registered users or assignees of Internet resources: domain names, IP addresses and autonomous systems. It shows registrar details, registration dates, nameservers and status.
Why is some Whois data redacted?+
GDPR (Europe) and similar privacy laws require registrars to hide personal contact information of domain registrants. Proxy/privacy protection services also mask registrant details. This is standard practice since 2018.
What is RDAP?+
RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern replacement for the older WHOIS protocol. It returns structured JSON data, supports HTTPS, and provides consistent output across registrars. This tool uses RDAP.
How do I find the registrar for a domain?+
Enter the domain in the lookup box. The Registrar field shows which company manages the domain registration (e.g. GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains).
What do the domain status codes mean?+
clientTransferProhibited prevents unauthorised transfers. serverDeleteProhibited prevents deletion. ok means the domain is active with no restrictions. Multiple status codes can apply simultaneously.
