What resolutions are available for YouTube thumbnails?+
YouTube generates up to 5 thumbnail sizes: maxresdefault (1280×720 HD), sddefault (640×480), hqdefault (480×360), mqdefault (320×180) and default (120×90). Not all videos have maxresdefault — older or less popular videos may only have lower resolutions.
Why is the HD thumbnail showing a grey image?+
If maxresdefault shows a grey placeholder, YouTube has not generated the 1280×720 version for that video. This happens with older videos or those with few views. Use sddefault instead.
Can I use downloaded thumbnails on my own website?+
YouTube thumbnails are copyrighted by the video creator. You may use them for personal reference or fair-use commentary but not for commercial purposes without the creator's permission.
How do I find a YouTube video ID?+
The video ID is the 11-character code after v= in a YouTube URL. Example: in youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ, the ID is dQw4w9WgXcQ. This tool also accepts the full URL.
Does this work for YouTube Shorts?+
