❓ FAQ
What is ping in networking?+
Ping measures the round-trip time for a packet to travel from your device to a server and back. Lower ping = faster response. It's used to test connectivity and measure latency between two points.
What is a good website ping response time?+
Under 100ms is excellent. 100–300ms is good for most web applications. 300ms–800ms is acceptable but noticeable. Over 800ms feels slow. Real-time applications (gaming, video calls) need under 50ms.
What is jitter?+
Jitter is the variation in ping times — the difference between the maximum and minimum response times. Low jitter means consistent performance. High jitter causes choppy video calls and laggy gaming even if average ping is acceptable.
Why is browser ping different from command-line ping?+
Command-line ping uses ICMP packets which many servers block. Browser "ping" measures HTTP request round-trip time through a proxy, which includes DNS, TCP handshake and HTTP overhead. Both measure connectivity but slightly differently.
Why do some pings fail or show high latency?+
The proxy API used for pinging adds overhead. Results may vary. For accurate latency, use command-line ping or tools like MTR. This tool gives a useful approximate response time from a user perspective.
