❓ FAQ
How do I calculate sales tax on a price?+
Sales tax amount = Pre-tax price × (Tax rate ÷ 100). Total = Pre-tax price + Tax amount. For $100 at 8.5% tax: tax = $8.50, total = $108.50.
How do I remove tax from a price to find the pre-tax amount?+
Pre-tax price = Total price ÷ (1 + Tax rate ÷ 100). For $108.50 including 8.5% tax: pre-tax = $108.50 ÷ 1.085 = $100.
What is the difference between sales tax and VAT?+
US sales tax is added at the point of sale and shown separately. VAT (Value Added Tax) in Europe is included in the displayed price. Both use similar percentage calculations but differ in how they appear on invoices and receipts.
What states have the highest sales tax?+
Combined state + local sales tax rates vary widely in the US. Louisiana (~9.5%), Tennessee (~9.5%) and Arkansas (~9.4%) rank among the highest. Some states have no sales tax (Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, Alaska).
Is sales tax the same as GST?+
They are similar concepts. GST (Goods and Services Tax) is used in Canada, Australia, India, New Zealand and others. US sales tax and GST/VAT all involve adding a percentage to prices — the calculation method is the same.
