I use this to proofread my blog posts before publishing. Hearing the text read aloud catches awkward sentences and typos my eyes miss. Absolutely brilliant tool.

No install, no account, just works. I use the slow speed setting to practise English pronunciation. The voice selection gives plenty of accent options.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Which voices are available?+
The voices shown in the dropdown are provided by your operating system. Windows, macOS, iOS and Android each include different built-in voices. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge may offer additional high-quality cloud-based voices that sound more natural than system voices.
Can I download the audio as an MP3 file?+
The Web Speech API used by this tool processes speech directly in the browser and does not support exporting audio to a file. For downloadable MP3 or WAV output, a cloud TTS service such as Google Cloud Text-to-Speech or Amazon Polly is needed. This tool is designed for listening — not for audio file production.
Why does the speech sound robotic?+
Older built-in system voices can sound synthetic. Try selecting a different voice from the dropdown — Microsoft Neural voices (in Edge) or Google voices (in Chrome) are significantly more natural. Reducing speed slightly (to 0.9×) can also improve naturalness on older voices.
Is there a character or word limit?+
This tool has no hard limit. However, very long texts may be cut off by your browser's Web Speech API implementation — this is a browser-level constraint, not a restriction of this tool. Most browsers handle several thousand words without issues. For extremely long texts, paste and speak in sections.
Does it support languages other than English?+
Yes — the tool supports any language for which your browser has a voice installed. The voice list automatically shows all voices on your device, including French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and many more. Simply paste text in the target language and select a matching voice.
Is my text private and secure?+
Yes, completely. All speech synthesis runs inside your browser using the HTML5 Web Speech API. Your text is never sent to our servers. Note that some cloud-enhanced voices in Chrome may contact Google's servers — this is your browser's behaviour and is not controlled by this site.
What speed settings work best for different uses?+
For proofreading: 0.8×–1.0× gives a natural, careful read that makes errors obvious. For language learning: 0.6×–0.8× for clear pronunciation practice. For quick content skimming: 1.4×–1.8×. For accessibility use: 0.9×–1.1× with a clear, neutral voice at high volume.
Can I use this on mobile?+
Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works on iOS Safari, Android Chrome and all modern mobile browsers. Mobile devices typically have high-quality built-in TTS voices including regional accents. The sliders and voice selector are optimised for touch interaction.

📚 Complete Guide — Free Online Text to Speech

What is Text to Speech and Who Uses It?

Text to Speech (TTS) is the conversion of written text into synthesised spoken audio. Modern browsers include a built-in Web Speech API that performs this conversion locally — no external service is required. TTS is used across a wide range of workflows:

  • Writers & bloggers — proofread content by listening, catching errors the eye misses
  • Language learners — hear correct pronunciation of words and phrases
  • Educators — create accessible audio versions of written materials
  • Developers — test accessibility and screen-reader behaviour of web content
  • Content creators — estimate podcast or video script duration before recording

Voice Quality: System Voices vs Cloud Voices

The quality of available voices depends on your browser and operating system:

BrowserVoice TypeQuality
Microsoft EdgeMicrosoft Neural + SystemExcellent — most natural
Google ChromeGoogle Cloud + SystemVery good
Safari (macOS/iOS)Apple Neural + SystemVery good
FirefoxSystem voices onlyGood (system-dependent)

For the best voice quality, use Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome — both provide high-quality neural voices in addition to the standard system voices.

Speed Settings Reference

SpeedBest For
0.5× – 0.7×Pronunciation practice, language learning, accessibility
0.8× – 1.0×Proofreading, careful listening, natural speech pace
1.1× – 1.3×Slightly faster review, familiar content
1.4× – 2.0×Quick content skimming, productivity listening

Using TTS for Proofreading

The most effective proofreading workflow with TTS is: (1) Write your content as normal. (2) Paste into the TTS input and set speed to 0.9×. (3) Read along visually while the tool speaks. (4) Your ear will catch missing words, repeated words, awkward phrasing and run-on sentences that your eye typically skips. This technique is used by professional editors and content agencies worldwide.

Estimated Duration Calculation

The estimated duration shown in the stats bar is calculated at an average speech rate of 150 words per minute at 1.0× speed. The calculation adjusts proportionally for your selected speed setting. Average adult speaking rate in presentations is 120–150 wpm; fast speakers reach 180–200 wpm. The estimate is useful for planning podcast scripts, video voiceovers and timed presentations.
